EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (AP) — The Village of East Palestine and Norfolk Southern have announced a $22 million settlement resolving all of the village’s claims arising from a disastrous 2023 train derailment near the Ohio-Pennsylvania border.

Norfolk Southern has suffered another derailment — although this one, thank goodness, was more an inconvenience than a disaster. Monday morning, at the company’s rail yard near Portsmouth, eight train cars carrying several thousand pounds of soybeans derailed.

The 40% improvement in operating earnings comes as the railroad settled a key claim over a 2023 Ohio derailment.
