A child in West Texas has died of measles, state health officials said on Wednesday, the first reported U.S. death from the highly contagious disease in a decade, as a Texas outbreak has grown from a handful of cases to more than 130 across two states.

Officials have confirmed a person infected with measles died at a Lubbock hospital, the first since the outbreak began in late January. According to a City of Lubbock news release, Lubbock health officials and the Department of State Health Services confirm the patient was an unvaccinated school-aged child.

Nearly a month after the first reported case of measles in the South Plains, health officials have confirmed the first death due to the outbreak.
